About the project
Time, memory, and useful context
Jewish Time & Memory connects Hebrew and Gregorian dates with the people, readings, holidays, and historical events that give those dates meaning.
Made for curious readers
The site is designed for Jewish and non-Jewish visitors alike: teachers preparing classroom material, families checking a Hebrew date, readers researching a yahrzeit, and anyone beginning to explore Jewish history or the Jewish calendar. Specialist terms are explained, and Hebrew information is accompanied by accessible English context.
Editorial method
Entries aim to be concise, factual, and useful as starting points for further reading. Biographical notes describe a person’s life, work, writings, offices, or actions without adding generic claims about why the person matters.
- Calendar calculations and weekly readings are generated from structured calendar data and presented for the Diaspora calendar.
- Yahrzeit entries include the original Hebrew date of death and the corresponding Gregorian date when it is sufficiently established.
- Traditional dates are identified as traditional rather than presented as modern documentary dates.
- Book and work titles are distinguished typographically, and direct source links are used when a relevant primary text or commentary is available.
- Jewish Women’s History material comes from a growing, reviewed research collection and is connected to the Gregorian dates displayed.
Calendar differences: customs, haftarah selections, transliterations, and some historical dates can vary between communities and sources. The site names the convention being used where that distinction affects the result.
Sources and corrections
Calendar information is supported by Hebcal data under CC BY 4.0. Biographical and historical entries are developed from reviewed research materials, established reference works, and primary texts where available.
Careful corrections are welcome, especially when accompanied by a reliable published or archival source. Please use the contact page for correction and source-submission information.
